Unique students require unique strategies for success.
We know our students each have a unique set of needs, and the teaching and learning in our classrooms must reflect that. Through our Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework, educators and administrators have proven tools at their disposal to support a timely and effective response to academic and behavioral needs for each student.
Tier 1 – High-quality Teaching and Learning
All students receive high-quality instruction in every classroom, and students are challenged to reach their full potential. Metro Schools’ instructional framework has three guiding principles: equitable instruction, ambitious instruction and instruction integrated with social-emotional learning. Norman Binkley uses SEL Foundations.
Tier 2 – Specialized Supports
Some students may need specialized supports in certain areas of academics or behavior and social-emotional learning, in combination with high-quality instruction in Tier 1.
In Tier 2, interventions are specifically targeted to meet students’ needs and are designed to help students excel in the classroom.
Tier 3 – Intensive Interventions
A few students will need intensive support and intervention.
In Tier 3, interventions are more intensive and targeted to meet specific needs in academics or social-emotional learning.
Intervention Programs Used at Norman Binkley
Norman Binkley uses Lexia Core5 for Tier 2 and Tier 3 reading intervention. We use iReady Math for Tier 2 and Tier 3 math intervention.
How MTSS Works
Norman Binkley has a dedicated MTSS team, representing teachers and leaders throughout the building. These teams meet and discuss students who may need additional supports and review each student’s supporting data.
Data-based Decision Making
Teams of educators work together to make data-based decisions for the school and for each individual student. MTSS data teams meet every five weeks to identify students who may need additional supports and interventions. These teams monitor students’ progress and adjust plans as needed.
MTSS Screening Process
The MTSS Universal Screening Process provides a starting point for identification of students who may need additional support through the use of nationally normed assessments. Norman Binkley uses multiple sources of data in the screening process:
- Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Assessment – standards-based screening
- Formative Assessment System for Teachers (FAST) – curriculum-based measures used for skills-based screening and monitoring progress
- Diagnostic assessments – various assessments used as needed to guide instruction to meet student needs
Personalized Learning Time
Every day our school honors Personalized Learning Time (PLT), during which students can receive extra supports based on their individual needs, including Tier II or Tier III services, Special Education interventions or general supports with instruction, English Language and enrichment. This time gives our teachers and school leaders the space they need to support our students with their most important job: learning.
